Stryker Howmedica
For a period of more than three years, Stryker Howmedica Corporation, one of the leading manufacturers of hip implant products, has been receiving complaints in regards to its implants. The complaints began with doctors and their patients as failures occurred, with the FDA becoming involved as these complaints continued to be generated.
Trouble for these Stryker products surfaced in January of 2005, when multiple complaints by consumers began to hit the news. The complaints included extreme pain in the post-surgical area, squeaky joints, parts of the implant breaking off and wearing down unevenly, and improper fittings led to bone fractures in the patients’ hip area.
In the summer of 2007, the FDA inspected Stryker’s manufacturing facility in New Jersey, and compiled a list of problems found there. Included among those were deficiencies in the quality control and the presence of disease-causing germs, including a dangerous strain of Staphylococcus bacteria. The FDA then sent a stern warning to Stryker Corporation in November of that same year warning that if the dangers were not immediately corrected, the FDA would undertake the act of seizing their property, and filing injunctions against them.
Eventually, on January 22, 2008, Stryker Corporation announced the recall of two products in the company’s Trident brand. The hip Implant components recalled involve two hip replacement cups – the Trident Acetabular PSL Cup and the Trident Hemispherical Cup. Both were manufactured at Stryker ‘s Cork, Ireland facility. Neither recall is related to the problems discovered at the New Jersey plant, which could result in more recalls as problems are investigated. If you have been injured or have suffered as a result of any these hip replacement products, contact a defective medical device attorney as soon as possible and schedule an initial consultation.
