Defective products can be deceiving.  Often, people are injured or killed by defective products without anyone knowing the true cause of their injury.  State and federal laws, as well as industry standards, require products to be safely designed.  However, some companies ignore or fail to follow these standards.

Service providers can cause death and injuries as well.   Pedicures and manicures have caused serious infections in many customers as a result of bacterial contamination or inadequate sanitation, leading to illnesses and even deaths.  The phone companies that provide local 911 services have cost lives by giving out the wrong addresses in emergencies, causing ambulances and fire trucks to arrive at accident scenes too late to be of help.   Medical errors cause 98,000 deaths annually and are the sixth largest cause of death in the U.S., according to the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences.
