Gynecare Mesh
The Gynecare Prolift Pelvic Floor System, is similar to many brands of vaginal mesh n that it has recently been linked to severe complications and health issues. The United States Food and Drug Administration has so far received over one thousand reports of health related problems associated with vaginal mesh devices, like the Gynecare mesh. Gynecare mesh complications may be life-threatening and can cause debilitating pain.
Gynecare Prolift procedure complications may include:
- Infection
- Erosion of the mesh into the vagina
- Recurrences of prolapse
- Urinary problems
- Bowel, bladder and blood vessel perforations
- Injury to nearby organs
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Pelvic pain
- Extrusion of the mesh device
Gynecare mesh is used most commonly to treat women who suffer from pelvic organ prolapse or POP. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when an organ, such as the bladder, drops from the typical position and begins to compress the vagina. Most pelvic organ prolapse occurs as the frequent result of a weakened pelvic muscle due to childbirth or surgery.
The most frequently reported Gynecare mesh complication is "erosion" in which the mesh works its way through the vaginal epithelium, eroding the thin lining covering the vaginal wall. In some cases, Gynecare mesh may cause trauma during insertion of the surgical mesh. Examples of trauma that may occur during insertion of Gynecare mesh include bladder, bowel, or blood vessel perforations.
Infections are another complication frequently reported to the FDA due to the use of Gynecare mesh. News reports have stated that Gynecare mesh infections most likely occur during insertion of the mesh through the vagina itself or, the Gynecare mesh's design can hamper surrounding tissues from receiving the required nutrients and oxygen, which can lead to an infection.
Major discomfort and pain due to Gynecare mesh complications, such as an erosion or infection; have caused many mesh recpients to suffer from"dyspareunia", or painful sexual intercourse. Dyspareunia is a persistent or recurring genital pain that happens just prior to, throughout, or post sex. Treatment for dyspareunia may require surgical procedures to remove the surgical mesh.
